Movie buffs looking forward
to watching Half of A yellow Sun, which
makes its cinema debut across the country today can kiss goodbye to their
dreams. Reason-The National Film & Videos Censors Board (NFVCB), has
suspended the screening of the big budget epic.
According to sources, the
move became necessary due to scenes in the epic which the board considers inappropriate
for viewing.
“This is authoritative. I can
assure you that all those waiting to see Half
of A Yellow Sun this weekend are in for a huge disappointment as the movie
has been suspended by the industry's regulator, the NFVCB. The implication is
that after a successful premiere, the movie cannot air within the territory of Nigeria
until certain scenes considered inappropriate are edited.”
The film is an adaptation
of Ngozi Chimamanda Adichie’s award winning novel, Half of A Yellow Sun starring BAFTA award winner, Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Meanwhile, in a new twist,
a credible source told toniogagablog that plans have reached advanced stages to
merge the NFVCB with the Nigerian Film Cooperation as a department under the
Ministry of Information. This is coming on the heels of the Orasanye report
which made the recommendation.
An industry stakeholder
who spoke on the grounds of anonymity said: “This is ridiculous. They want to
kill Nollywood which is the number one employer of labour in Nigeria. All the
gains and achievements of the NFVCB to sanitise the industry would be lost if
the merger takes place. Nigeria needs a strong and vibrant regulatory authority.”
For another film maker who
also craved anonymity: “This development is tragic. Merging the Board with the
Ministry of Information will be a total disaster.”
However, attempts to speak
to officials of the board were not successful at press time.
