LAST weekend, the city of Benin City, Edo State, came to a standstill when it played host to the marriage of the Ooni of Ife to his new bride, Olori Wuraola Otiti. Indeed it was fun and excitement. The event was well attended by members of both families, including chiefs and high chiefs. Though the wedding was fixed for Saturday, March 12, to make sure that all plans went well, Ooni High Chiefs sent a delegation to Benin for the wedding and it was led by the scion of Ogunwusi Kingdom, Prince Aderopo Ogunwusi who is the father of the Ooni. However, one person who was conspicuously absent was the Ooni himself. Commenting on why he was absent at the wedding, a source said: “Tradition does not permit the Ooni to come for the wedding. It is a known fact that the Ooni cannot prostrate before anybody and cannot also beg; tradition forbids him to do that!
