All is set for the
celebration of the 80th birthday anniversary of Nigeria’s longest serving
monarch, His Majesty, Oba Dr. S.K. Adetona, Awujale and Paramount Ruler of
Ijebuland.
The disclosure was made
last week Tuesday at the Oba’s palace during a press conference to unveil plans
for the celebration. According to the Vice Chairman Sub Planning Committee,
Chief Fassy Yusuf: “On Wednesday April 2, His Majesty, Sikiru Kayode Adetona,
the 58th Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Kingdom clocked 54-years on the
throne. He is currently the longest serving First Class and Paramount King in
Nigeria. He will also be 80 years on Saturday, May 10 and this provides us with
a spectacular opportunity to celebrate a man who has contributed so much to the
growth of Nigeria and the Ijebu people. Consequently, a six days celebration
has been planned to celebrate his person and his achievements.”
According to Yusuf,
celebrations will kick-off officially on May 4 with a Thanksgiving Service at
the Cathedral Church of Our Saviour, Ijebu Ode, at 12 noon. May 6 will witness
a colloquium on the Ijebu nation and a coffee-table book presentation on Oba
Adetona. It would also witness an awards ceremony including The Oba Adetona
Essay Writing Competition.
Day three, Wednesday May 7,
will witness the grand finale of the maiden edition of Awujale Adetona Football
Competition, which holds at the Otumba Dipo Dina International stadium, Ijebu
Ode. On May 8, a grand reception would be held at the Oba S.K. Adetona Golden Jubillee
Centre, Ijebu Ode, at 9am.
There will be a special
prayer session at Ijebu Ode Central Mosque between 12 noon and 1pm, on Friday,
May 9. The celebrations climaxes on Saturday,
May 10, with a grand luncheon party holding at the Marquee, Otunba Dipo
Dina International Stadium.
Oba Adetona was recalled
from his studies in the UK and formerly ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, at
the age of 16.
