The parents of a 12 year-old Muslin girl, Siham Hamud, have been threatened with legal action over their daughter’s insistence on violating her school’s dress code.
Uxbridge High School, Hillingdon, West London, stipulates girls either wear black trousers or a black pleated skirt but Siham for years has been wearing a long skirt to school. In a letter issued by Uxbridge High School to Hamud’s parents, the school threatened legal action would be taken against them because Siham’s absence at school was unauthorized and may result in a fine. Uxbridge urged her parents to support the school and their daughter by ensuring that she attends school in full school uniform with immediate effect.
However, Mr. Idris Hamud, Siham’s dad stated that the skirts falls above the knee hence both uniform choices contravene the family's strict religious beliefs which stipulates that women only wear long skirts.
Mr. Hamud said: “All Siham wants to do is wear a skirt a few centimeters longer than her classmates. I don’t know why the school has such a problem with this. She’s always been a bright girl, one of the top in her class and she loves school but now they just keep sending her home. Siham makes her own decisions about her religion and I can’t make her wear clothes she doesn’t want to wear and neither should the school. She is being denied an education because of her religious beliefs. I don’t know how anyone can get away with that.”
Reacting, Siham said: "It feels like bullying because of what I believe. I think they should just let me wear my school uniform to school. I feel confused and annoyed that I can’t wear what I want for my religion. I hope they will change their rules so that girls like me wear skirts to school.”
Speaking, the school's principal, Nigel Clemens said it was inappropriate to comment as the matter is currently subject to examination through the formal school complaints policy. However, the issue would be discussed by a complaints panel with school governors later this month.
